One of the few places on Earth where all four volcano types exist, with boiling springs, steaming fumaroles, and active geological drama.

A true geological wonder, Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California showcases all four types of volcanoes found in the world—shield, plug dome, cinder cone, and stratovolcano. The park’s centerpiece is Lassen Peak, one of the largest plug dome volcanoes on Earth, which last erupted in 1915 and left behind a fascinating, still-active volcanic landscape.

Visitors to Lassen find themselves immersed in an otherworldly terrain of boiling springs, steaming fumaroles, mud pots, and sulfur vents. The park’s hydrothermal areas like Bumpass Hell offer surreal, colorful landscapes reminiscent of Iceland or Yellowstone—but with far fewer crowds.

The region holds cultural significance for Native Californian tribes like the Yana and Atsugewi, who believed in the spiritual forces residing in the mountains and springs. Even today, traditional stories and respect for the geothermal powers remain part of the park’s narrative.

Accessible by car, with well-maintained trails and educational centers, Lassen is ideal for families, geology enthusiasts, and hikers alike. The park is especially stunning in spring and early summer when wildflowers carpet the meadows beneath snow-draped peaks.

This is a place where science, beauty, and cultural heritage come together to create one of the most underrated yet spectacular national parks in the West.
