Adityawarman Museum is located on Jalan Diponegoro No. 10 Padang, inaugurated March 16, 1977 by Minister of Education and Culture Prof. DR. Syarif Thayeb. Based on Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 01/1991 dated January 9, 1991, the Museum was named Adityawarman. This is to remember the services of a Minangkabau king in the XIV century AD. We can find out its greatness through its heritage in the form of inscriptions found in Saruaso, Lima Kaum, Pagaruyung, and Bhairawa statues (now in the National Museum – Jakarta) and Padang Rocok temple in the Sijunjung area.

In accordance with the Level II Regional Government Decree, Padang No. 3071 / SDTK / XVIII-74 dated August 8, 1974. The museum is located in Tugu Field complex Jl. Diponegoro Padang. Built on 2.5 hectares of land covered with 100 types of plants in the form of protective trees, ornamental plants and living pharmacies.

This location was once known as Taman Melati, a park where residents of Padang City play. In the Dutch colonial period at this location stood Tugu Micheils which in the Japanese occupation according to the story, this monument was torn down, and the iron was brought to Japan

The museum as a cultural heritage preservation institution carries out publishing activities, seminars, shows / competitions, Collection Procurement Survey, Local Museum Supervision, School Entrance Museum, Cultural Information Extension, etc.
