Minahasa is one of the districts located in North Sulawesi Province. Refers to high plant diversity in Sulawesi which has transitional characteristics between Asian and Australasian plants. The high rate of deforestation is around 173,260 ha per year (2000-2005), so the idea of establishing a botanical garden as an ex situ conservation area in Minahasa Regency is a step that needs to be supported by all parties. The planning location of the Minahasa Botanical Garden covering 186 ha was determined based on the Minahasa Regent Decree No: 204 / BM / VIII-2009 dated August 13, 2009. This location is state-owned land located in Makaweimben Village, North Tondano District, Minahasa Regency. The conservation of “Wallacea upland plants” is a theme that has been set for the Minahasa Botanical Gardens considering the location of the Minahasa at the base of the “Wallacea Line” and the planning location which is located at altitude of 900-1,100 m above sea level.
At present, the Minahasa Botanical Gardens are not physically built yet, but are still in the preparation stage. The concept of the utilization zone plan was compiled in 2009. It is hoped that the concept will become a guideline in the development of the Minahasa Botanical Gardens. In planning the construction of botanical gardens a body has been formed which plays a role in realizing the Minahasa Botanical Gardens under the coordination of the Forestry Service and the Public Works Agency.
