Kalimantan is one of the islands in the world that has the highest diversity of flora, consisting of woody plants, shrubs, and many endemic plants and rare including fruit plants. Based on research carried out by several conservation organizations, Kalimantan and Papua Island are rich in various wet tropical forest trees of high economic value and are also rich in various types of tropical fruits and are islands of native Indonesian fruit germplasm.
Until now there is no botanical garden in Indonesia which is the center of ex situ conservation of native Indonesian fruit plants. In the context of ex situ Indonesia conservation, then making the Katingan Botanical Garden as a Conservation Center for Kalimantan, Indonesia and tropical fruits generally becomes a very important opportunity to be utilized. Because most fruits are commodities that have high economic value.
Kalimatan is also known to have many medicinal plants that have been known for a long time by the indigenous people of Kalimantan, such as pasak bumi, selung beleum, yellow root, barito barat, and others. This also has the potential to support the development of the Katingan Botanical Garden
