The history of the location of the Balangan Botanical Gardens is inseparable from the myth of Mount Pandau or also called Mount Garuda Maharam. That said, the mountain was once inhabited by an eagle that was incubating its eggs and the Pandawa kingdom once lived in the area. The development of these myths has caused some of the forest area of Gunung Pandau to be well maintained until now. The Dutch government had carried out petroleum exploration activities in the 1930s in the Gunung Pandau forest area and found 12 former petroleum drilling points. However, because it does not have good economic value, petroleum mining has never been done. Furthermore, some areas were developed into settlements, rubber gardens and some of them were maintained as forest areas which would later be developed into Balangan Botanical Gardens.
