Overview of position:

The School Social Worker is entrusted with the responsibility of providing services as permitted through appropriate licensure designated by the State of Colorado. Partnering with a robust and highly competent K-8 student services team at Denver Language School, the School Social Worker is responsible for providing services to students with IEPs and/or Section 504 plans as directed by the Principal (and/or designate). The School Social Worker has an instrumental role in developing a culture of optimism, positivity and belonging at a thriving and remarkably successful public school.

Essential Functions and Objectives

  • Provide direct and indirect School Social Work services as specified in students’ IEPs and/or Section 504 plans;
  • Analyze data pertaining both daily and period attendance to identify students of note in pursuit of school goals for participation;
  • Assist faculty/staff and community members in developing and implementing behavior management plans to remediate problem behaviors;
  • Assist students in improving their academic, personal and social functioning;
  • Aid staff in the design and implementation of appropriate interventions and accommodations for students;
  • Provide social skills, anger management, stress reduction or other similar instruction to students who are experiencing social/emotional/behavioral problems that interfere with their learning or the ability of others to learn.
  • Provide information to families and assists them in accessing long-term or intensive counseling services, as needed
  • Provide short-term individual and group counseling to students who are experiencing social/emotional/behavioral problems that interfere with their learning or the ability of others to learn.
  • Works collaboratively with special education staff in designing and implementing social skills, anger management, stress reduction or other similar instruction
  • Provide information and assistance to families to help them understand their child’s educational disability and equip them with the tools necessary to support their child’s educational and/or behavioral progress.
  • Provide information to parents regarding the referral/assessment process, special education services available within the school, and their rights relative to special education.
  • Provides information to students and parents about services available within the community. Makes referrals to community providers, as appropriate.
  • Conducts social/developmental assessments of students referred for special education, assists in determining eligibility for special education.
  • Provide and/or assist in professional development for staff, parents, and/or community.
  • Proficiently use technology to communicate, compile reports, and collect data.
  • Participate in building or program activities and meetings as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with appropriate individuals across both campuses to support applicable initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) preferred. Full licensure requirements for the role are accessible via ;
  • Working knowledge of the principles, practices and ethical standards of School Social Work; the relevant state and federal laws, rules and regulations, a willingness to partner with the authorising school district (Denver Public Schools);
  • Contemporary knowledge of the community resources and support systems available to assist students and their families;
  • Ability to work effectively and appropriately with students, families, and other educational professionals regarding student concerns and problems exercising professional decorum and discretion as befitting circumstances;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to consult with school personnel in developing and implementing effective social and behavioral interventions for students.

Salary Range: for new-to-DLS employees, salary at entry shall be $58,785 - $61,232.
