What You Will Do


The Network Services group is a customer-focused team responsible for managing LANL's open and secured networks. We oversee authentication services and network devices, including routers, switches, load balancers, internal and perimeter firewalls, and intrusion prevention systems. Additionally, we manage secure data transport between networks and provide network services such as DNS, DHCP, and NTP.


As a trusted team member, you will assist in the maintenance and administration of network devices while also contributing to the planning and design of LANL's network infrastructure. This role requires a well-rounded professional with expertise in various security and networking technologies, including DNS & DHCP, ACL creation, TCP/IP, and routing protocols.

Our team plays a dynamic and critical role in maintaining the core network services across all LANL networks, ensuring security, stability, and performance.

This position will be filled at either the Network Professional 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.


Network Professional 1 ($78,700 - $125,100)

  • Designing, specifying, and developing secure remote access solutions to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Conducting research and development to identify and implement emerging technologies in access control and firewall policy management.
  • Performing capacity and availability planning for computing infrastructure to ensure optimal performance and uptime.
  • Providing operational support to customers, including troubleshooting, granting permissions, and trining users.
  • Resolving tickets in a timely and effective manner, which may involve configuring access control lists (ACLs) and firewall policies.

Network Professional 2 ($85,900 - $139,900)

  • Operating with minimal supervision, you'll resolve complex technical issues for customers.
  • Providing technical guidance and direction to junior team members, mentoring and training them to improve their skills and knowledge.
  • Leading projects as assigned, overseeing the planning, implementation, and completion of network initiatives.
What You Need


Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience configuring ACLs or firewall policies.
  • Basic understanding of networking principles (such as TCP/IP, VLANs, DNS, DHCP).
  • Strong documentation skills, with experience creating clear and concise procedures for troubleshooting.
  • Experience troubleshooting customer-facing problems, such as in a help desk environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical information verbally and in writing to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Additional Job Requirements for Network Professional 2:

  • Experience configuring network or security devices without direct supervision.
  • Proven ability to work independently with customers while providing technical support to resolve complex issues.
  • Experience with remote access solutions.
  • Leadership and mentoring skills, with demonstrated experience providing technical direction and guidance to more junior team members.

Education/Experience at lower level : Position requires an Associate's Degree and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.


Education/Experience at higher level : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with suppliers to define expectations and mutual responsibilities.
  • Experience with ZScaler.
  • Experience using logging systems for troubleshooting and analysis (such as with Splunk).
  • Active DOE Q-Clearance
  • Experience configuring Cisco or Arista network devices
  • Industry level certifications, such as CCNA, Network+, Security+

Work Environment:


Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.


Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.


*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.


New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.


Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
